Choose the right law firm

Problem 1

Lawyers are too expensive to have on a retainer because I don't have that many legal problems.

Solution 1

Don't put your lawyers on a retainer. Agree on a competitive, reasonable and affordable hourly fee and only call upon your lawyer when you need him.

Problem 2

Agreeing on a reasonable hourly fee is fine, but the hourly rate among different attorneys is usually an indication of that attorney's experience.

Solution 2

You're right, but the key word is "reasonable". Find a law firm that uses paralegals, law clerks, and state of the art computer support so that many of the hours billed will be at a rate considerably less than that of the supervising attorney. In addition, the use of state of the art computer systems will reduce the total time billed.

Problem 3

I think that I should sue that guy, but if I lose the only people who make any money are the lawyers.

Solution 3

The best legal advice you can probably get is from an attorney who is willing to represent you on a contingency basis. In other words if your case is not successful, you incur no attorney fees. If an attorney gets paid only if he wins then, since he is also taking a risk in the case, he is likely to advise you to proceed on cases that have true merit.

Problem 4

Large law firms think of me as a number and I never even get to meet the real partners.

Solution 4

You are important. Find a law firm that at recognizes that fact.

Problem 5

I'm important to one and two man law firms but they keep referring me to outside law firms for problems outside the scope of their practice.

Solution 5

Find a small to mid sized full service law firm where and the firm has been created in a way that allows attorneys to concentrate their practice in different areas of law, and, most important, meet the partners.

Problem 6

All this sounds great, but where on this "Small Blue Planet" do I find such a law firm?
